Just saw a documentary about the exhibition that took place last year at the pallais des beaux arts called “Visionary Belgium”. Harald Zseeman , the curator of this exposition , died while creating this exhibition but left us a very good and clear idea of Belgian art. It is in this place that I discovered the world of Robert Garcet, paleontologist and artist who built the tower of Eben Ezer. The tower stands for peace and is full of symbols referring to a book of the evangelist. Robert Garcet built the tower completely by himself. His projects are very visionary as he claims that there would have been human beings living 70 million years ago in the stone mine where he found the stones to built his tower. In the beginning stage of the project (1952) he used a wheelbarrow to transport the stones and when he got some more money he bought a Citroen 2CV to built the rest of his tower. I was very pleased to hear that he drove the car until the end of his life (2001). Belgian artist’s characteristics are based on double mentalities. Big visionary projects with megalomaniac ideas combined with the simplicity in the way of living and developing ideas. I read a book about Belgian art (l’art Belge depuis 1975), (I will talk more about later on), which explains clearly these oppositions in the Belgian art world. I am pleased to see that my concept of the Kingdom of the Unknown fits in this general idea of the opposites as I claim to be a King still I drive a very little car.
